Columbus Monument Viewpoint

The Mirador de Colón offers one of the most special views of Barcelona from a unique historical space. Its interior lift takes you directly to the upper platform, where you can see some of the city's most emblematic sights at a glance: the Cathedral, Montjuïc Castle, the Barcelona coastline, the Fòrum and Collserola Natural Park.

What's more, admission to the Mirador is included free of charge with the Barcelona Card Family, ideal for families who want to discover the city while enjoying a wide range of cultural attractions.

The monument was built on the initiative of Barcelona City Council for the 1888 Universal Exhibition, becoming one of the city's first major modern urban developments.

It commemorates Christopher Columbus' return from his first voyage to America, when he arrived at the port of Barcelona to present his account to the Catholic Monarchs. Although Columbus' figure points towards the sea, it does not actually point to the New World, a detail that surprises many visitors.

The sculpture, created by Rafael Atché, is made of bronze and measures over 7 metres in height. The column that supports it is decorated with reliefs narrating episodes from the voyage of discovery. Since its inauguration, the monument has become an icon of the Barcelona coastline and a symbol of the historical link between Spain and the American continent.
