Visit to Bodegas Codorníu

In the town of Sant Sadurní, in the heart of the Alt Penedès, you’ll find Spain’s oldest family-run business, Codorníu, which was founded more than 450 years ago.

The Codorníu winery was designed by the Catalan art- nouveau, or modernista, architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch (a contemporary of Gaudí’s), and listed as an Artistic and Historic Landmark in 1976. The building symbolises the alliance between nature and human endeavour and is a tribute in stone to the silence of the cava-making process.

Codorníu was the first winery to produce cava using the traditional method with grape varieties native to the Penedès, including Macabeu, Xarel·lo and Parellada.

It also makes wines with other grapes, such as Chardonnay. Codorníu have used this variety since 1983 to make their cava Anna de Codorníu, which pays homage to the last member of the Codorníu family to have this surname.

Catalan cava is a sparkling wine made following the traditional method (the same used for Champagne), but produced primarily in the Penedès region of Catalonia, Spain. It’s crafted through a second fermentation in the bottle, which gives it its characteristic bubbles and complexity.
Unlike Champagne, cava typically uses native grape varieties such as Macabeu, Xarel·lo and Parellada, although some modern cavas also incorporate international grapes like Chardonnay or Pinot Noir. As a result, we get a fresh, elegant, and versatile wine, ideal for celebrations but also perfect for food pairing.
Codorníu, one of the oldest family-run wineries in Spain, was a pioneer in the production of cava, with roots dating back to the 16th century and the first bottles of cava produced in 1872.
