The monument was built on the initiative of Barcelona City Council for the 1888 Universal Exhibition, becoming one of the city's first major modern urban developments.

It commemorates Christopher Columbus' return from his first voyage to America, when he arrived at the port of Barcelona to present his account to the Catholic Monarchs. Although Columbus' figure points towards the sea, it does not actually point to the New World, a detail that surprises many visitors.

The sculpture, created by Rafael Atché, is made of bronze and measures over 7 metres in height. The column that supports it is decorated with reliefs narrating episodes from the voyage of discovery.
