The Cementiri de Montjuïc is a monumental cemetery set on the southern slope of Barcelona's mountain. Spanning 56 hectares, it is the resting place of prominent families and distinguished figures, surrounded by mausoleums and sculptures by renowned architects, sculptors and glassmakers. Conceived as an English garden, its winding paths, Mediterranean vegetation and cypress trees create a tranquil setting with views out to sea. Walking its quiet avenues is to move through an open-air museum where funerary art and landscape invite quiet contemplation.

This is good to know

Some tombs, such as the Güell mausoleums, display rich symbolism: angels, marine gargoyles (lobsters, seahorses) and motifs of resurrection.
The cemetery also preserves significant funerary architecture and houses the only collection of funeral carriages in Europe.
The Fossar de la Pedrera is a key site of democratic memory, honouring the victims of the Spanish Civil War and the Francoist dictatorship, and above all Lluís Companys.
