The Arc de Triomf is a civic triumphal arch built as the entrance to the 1888 Universal Exhibition. Designed by Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas, its 30-metre red-brick structure is a vivid example of Neo-Mudéjar style, rich in symbolic detail. Rather than celebrating military victories, it reflects the city’s artistic, scientific and commercial progress at the time. The reliefs, by artists including Josep Reynés and Josep Llimona, depict allegorical scenes that present Barcelona to the world in a gesture of openness and modernity.

This is good to know

If you’re after the best light, cross the promenade at sunset and the red brick comes alive, the city soaking up its warmth.
It is one of the few triumphal arches in Europe built with a strictly civic purpose, far removed from the military symbolism of its counterpart in Paris.
