The Monument als herois de 1809 (Monument to the Heroes of 1809) commemorates the patriots executed during Barcelona’s occupation by Napoleonic troops. This bronze ensemble of life-sized figures recalls the city’s resistance to the French army. It is completed with allegorical reliefs and ceramic details that reference episodes from the Peninsular War. Begun in 1929 and inaugurated in 1941, it stands beside the cloister where the victims were buried.

This is good to know

Although the sculpture shows five figures, the inscription on the monument commemorates the eight people executed in 1809.
