First, the scepters are lit. Then, the Gate of Hell opens, and Passeig de Gràcia is engulfed in flames. The Ceptrotada and Correfoc of La Mercè bring together devils, dragons, and festive creatures in one of the most intense expressions of Barcelona's popular culture. Percussion, smoke, gunpowder, and a shower of sparks accompany the procession, with the public watching from the sidelines or entering, well protected, into the heart of the festivities.

Clothing matters here. Long sleeves, trousers, and cotton garments are the sensible choice; synthetic fabrics and fire make a much worse combination. If it's your first time, it's best to keep your distance before deciding to step into the sparks.
