Casa Sayrach is one of the city’s last modernista buildings, rising gracefully on a corner of Avinguda de la Diagonal. Manuel Sayrach, its architect, sought to distil all he had learned from the great modernista masters into this elegant work. The undulating façade, the organic detailing of the doorway and the slender tower all reflect the Gaudí-inspired influence that characterises much of Barcelona. It is a corner that invites passers-by to see the city’s shapes and curves with fresh eyes.

This is good to know

Sayrach, also a writer and dilettante, viewed architecture as a “living organism”. Hence the almost liquid forms that defy gravity and common sense throughout the building.
The vestibule, open only on special occasions, is even more dreamlike, with staircases that seem to grow like seaweed.
