An 18th-century Baroque-style building in the heart of the Gothic quarter, the Basílica de la Mercè is inspired by the Counter-Reformation models of its time and consists of a single nave with a dome. Its richly decorated façade is crowned by the Virgin of La Mercè, patron saint of Barcelona. Inside, the temple reveals fine stone and woodwork, an altarpiece and a 3,000-pipe organ. Beyond its decorative splendour, the basilica served for centuries as a spiritual and social epicentre for generations of Barcelonans.

This is good to know

The basilica occasionally hosts organ concerts: carefully restored, the instrument fills the nave, turning it into a resonant space that can move anyone listening.
The figure of the Virgin crowning the temple was added in 1888, to coincide with the Universal Exposition. Today, she watches over the city from her baroque pedestal.
If you visit the basilica at sunset, make the most of the soft light to admire the sculptural details of the façade. The experience is all the more intimate and evocative.
