The Monestir de Montserrat is a historic Benedictine abbey set in the heart of Catalonia’s most striking mountain. Its façade combines Gothic and Renaissance elements, while inside art, spirituality and centuries of history sit side by side. It is still a living monastery, where music is heard every day thanks to the Escolania, one of the oldest boys’ choirs in Europe. Visited by pilgrims, tourists and mountaineers, it is also home to the Mare de Déu de Montserrat (“la Moreneta”), patron saint of Catalonia.

This is good to know

Around 80 Benedictine monks live here, devoted to prayer and to welcoming pilgrims.
The monastery can be reached by rack railway or cable car, both offering wide views as the ascent begins.
The complex includes a museum, walking routes and services such as restaurants, a hotel and shops, making it easy to spend longer there.
