The Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes is a Gothic monastic complex founded in the 14th century by Queen Elisenda de Montcada. Located in the Pedralbes district, it reflects the austerity and spirituality characteristic of medieval Catalan art. Its architecture combines the elegance of stone with a quiet sense of harmony, where light and silence move through one of the largest and best-preserved Gothic cloisters in Europe. Inside, the church and monastic buildings preserve works of significant artistic value, offering a window into centuries of Barcelona’s religious and cultural history.

This is good to know

The cloister is one of the most distinctive in Europe. Its more than 60 capitells depict fantastical animals and scenes from both the Bible and everyday life, some with an unexpected touch of humour.
In the Capella de Sant Miquel, 14th-century Gothic frescoes by Ferrer Bassa are still visible, forming one of the finest examples of medieval Catalan painting, with strong echoes of Italian art.
