Casa Vicens is an eclectic, orientalist style house, Gaudí’s first work and an early step in the development of Catalan Modernisme. Located in Gràcia, it brings together Arab, Mudéjar and oriental influences, with glazed ceramics, exposed brick and sculpted carnations. Its straight lines, unusual within Gaudí’s later work, create a sense of freshness and restraint rather than ornament. There is no grandiosity here, only intuition. Moving through the rooms, you can trace the emergence of a distinctive architectural language: youthful, bold and with a restrained sense of beauty.

This is good to know

The visit gives access to the original rooms designed by Gaudí, along with a permanent exhibition that sets his early work in context.
The façades, covered in glazed ceramic, relate closely to the garden, reflecting a careful approach to how the building engages with nature.
On the friezes, inscriptions draw on Catalan folk tales, a detail that becomes clearer on closer inspection.
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, it is closely linked to the origins of Catalan Modernisme.
