The Torre de les Aigües de la Catalana de Gas is a modernista structure within Barcelona’s industrial heritage. Built at the end of the 19th century in exposed brick with trencadís (ceramic mosaic) detailing, it was designed to provide the pressure required for the operation of the former gas factory. It functioned as infrastructure, but also reflected the city’s understanding of progress at the time. Although it no longer pumps water, it retains its vertical form and remains prominent among the surrounding contemporary buildings.

This is good to know

Following the demolition of the factory in 1989, the tower was preserved as a remnant of its industrial past and now stands as a landmark in the surrounding area.
Its design combines function and aesthetics, reflecting the relationship between engineering and Modernisme characteristic of the period.
