The Museu Frederic Marès is a collector’s museum born from the donation the sculptor made to Barcelona. Its holdings include an outstanding collection of Hispanic sculpture, especially religious works, spanning from Antiquity to the 19th century. At the same time, the museum also opens the door to Marès’s personal universe, where medieval sculptures coexist with everyday objects, keepsakes and unusual collections. In rooms devoted to festivities, trades and domestic life, a comb, a pipe or a fan can reveal a great deal about how people lived, worked and represented the world.

This is good to know

Some display cases bring together different types of fans: more than simple accessories, they functioned as social objects and almost as a non-verbal code of the past.
