Start the day with breakfast at Café Palau, in the foyer of this striking building. It is one of those places where everything just works: the coffee, the light, the architecture and the sense of being somewhere special.

The Palau de la Música Catalana is one of the most beautiful concert halls in the world and one of the city’s key landmarks. Culture, music and architecture come together here in way that is hard to put into words. 

Recommendations: 

• Consider a guided tour to learn more about its history.
• If you can, visit during a live performance. It changes the experience completely.

Leave the Palau and continue along Carrer de Trafalgar. On the way, you can stop at the Banksy Museum (no. 34), a must for anyone interested in street art. (museobanksy.es/en/) 

At the end of the street you come to the Arc de Triomf, an impressive monument built for the 1888 Universal Exposition. Keep your camera ready as Passeig de Lluís Companys and the Arc de Triomf work particularly well together.

Head down Passeig de Lluís Companys to Parc de la Ciutadella, Barcelona’s main green space, a good place to take a break with family or friends. The park is full of small discoveries: 

• The Hivernacle (Greenhouse), one of the finest examples of 19th-century iron architecture, now used for botanical exhibitions daily from 10 am to 8 pm with free entry. 

• The Centre Martorell d’Exposicions, once the city’s first public museum and now part of the Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona. 

• The Umbracle and the Castell dels Tres Dragons, currently under restoration. The Castell once housed a café during the 1888 Universal Exposition.

Don’t miss the monumental waterfall fountain, one of Gaudí’s earliest works.

Leave the park via Passeig de Picasso and go through Passatge Mercantil to get to the El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria, known for its wrought-iron structure. Continue on to your next stop: Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar. 

Considered one of the finest examples of Catalan Gothic architecture, this is one of Barcelona’s most special churches. Built in just 54 years, it is also a symbol of community: wealthier residents contributed financially, while poorer workers such as the bastaixos (dock labourers) did the physical work. They are still represented today, both on the main altar and at the entrance doors. 

Recommendations: 

• Access to the terraces and towers is not permitted for children under 8. 

• Outdoor areas close in case of rain.

A small challenge: look for the stained-glass window with FC Barcelona’s crest. Can you spot it? 

On leaving, stroll along Carrer dels Sombrerers and stop at no. 23, Casa Gispert, a historic shop where you can buy nuts and other delicious treats. 

Did you know? This street is also known as “Matacapellans” (or “priest-killers”) because of the strong draughts that used to run through it. Nearby you will also find the narrowest street in the city, Carrer de les Mosques.

Housed in a former 17th-century stable, this restaurant serves Mediterranean dishes inspired by traditional recipes and local culinary heritage.

More informal and full of character, this bar serves classic tapas such as capipota (traditional Catalan meat stew) and prawn omelette. The interior is filled with boxing memorabilia, and it is said that Gabriel García Márquez once visited.

Did you know? If you are still in the mood for something sweet, head to Hofmann pastry shop (Carrer dels Flassaders, 44), which has won multiple awards. Each creation is like a small work of art.

With more than 5,000 works, this museum is key to understanding Picasso’s relationship with Barcelona. It was founded by the artist as a gesture of gratitude for the city’s role in his formative years, and the five palaces that house it are well worth seeing in their own right.

Recommendations: 

• Book in advance via the official website. 

• If you plan to visit more museums, consider the Barcelona Card Essential. 

• Check the website for temporary and permanent exhibitions.

• Free entry with advance booking: first Sunday of each month; Thursdays from 4 pm to 7 pm (29/09–29/03), and Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 7 pm to 9 pm (31/03–27/09). Reservations open four days in advance at 10 am. 

Afterwards, take your time wandering through the streets of El Born and discover places full of character such as Londji, a shop specialising in wooden toys with original designs (Carrer de la Princesa, 49, londji.com). Continue along Carrer dels Carders and Carrer de Giralt el Pellisser to reach the Mercat de Santa Caterina, a bustling market rich in fresh produce and local life. 

Did you know? Every neighbourhood in Barcelona has its own municipal market and Santa Caterina was designed by architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue. Step inside and take a look.

Crossing Via Laietana, you arrive at Plaça Nova, dominated by the Catedral. At the corner with Carrer dels Arcs is the Col·legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya, with Picasso-designed sgraffito façades depicting festive scenes, including giants celebrating local culture. On the ground floor, La Capell, a superb design shop (lacapell.com), is well worth a stop. 

Did you know? Nearby you will find Joan Fontcuberta’s photomosaic El món neix en cada besada (The World Begins with Every Kiss). Get closer to see how it was made. 

You now enter the Gothic heart of the city where you can visit the Catedral, dedicated to Santa Eulàlia, one of Barcelona’s patron saints. Inside, you will find a beautiful wooden choir, the crypt of Santa Eulàlia beneath the altar and a Gothic cloister with a fountain where, during the Corpus Christi festival, the traditional ou com balla takes place. This involves balancing an egg on the water jet so it appears to “dance” in fountains found in cloisters, courtyards or gardens.

Recommendations: 

• Residents of the Diocese of Barcelona can enter free of charge at any time with proof of residence.

• Take the lift up to the roof for a unique view over the Gothic Quarter.

Did you know? There are thirteen white geese in the cloister, matching the age of Santa Eulàlia at the time of her martyrdom. 

When you leave, you come to one of the most atmospheric moments of the day: Plaça de Sant Felip Neri, a quiet square that still bears traces of the Spanish Civil War, with bullet marks visible on the walls.

From here, go along Baixada de Santa Eulàlia. At the corner with Carrer dels Banys Nous, no. 20, you will find L’Arca (larcabarcelona.com), a vintage shop with a wide selection of clothing and accessories. Turn left and you reach Oliver Decoració (Carrer dels Banys Nous, 10, worldsoliver.es), where remains of the old Jewish baths can still be seen. Continue past Sombrereria Obach (Carrer del Call, 2, sombrereriaobach.com), a hat shop founded in 1924. 

Finally, head down Carrer de la Boqueria to reach La Rambla. 

Did you know? The Roca brothers have an ice cream parlour here, which is a good excuse for a refreshing stop. 

To round off the afternoon, visit Palau Güell. Here you will see Gaudí’s early work and get a clearer sense of how his architectural style developed. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, this palace was the home of the industrialist Eusebi Güell and his family. 

It is less visited than other Gaudí landmarks but well worth your time. 

Recommendations: 

• Free entry on the first Sunday of the month, but advance online booking is required, opening at 10 am on the previous Thursday.

• The rooftop and terrace close in bad weather, so it is worth checking the forecast. 

• A key Gaudí site at an affordable price. 

End the day on Rambla del Raval, home to Botero’s famous Gat (Cat) sculpture, in a neighbourhood with plenty of character.

A Barcelona classic with history and a certain soul, long a refuge for artists, writers and cultural figures.

Creative and a little unexpected, ideal for sharing, with Galician and Mediterranean touches that leave a lasting impression. If you still have the energy, round off the day with a cocktail at NeverBCN. You’ve earned it.

Start the day at Laie café and bookshop in the heart of the Eixample. It is a calm spot for breakfast surrounded by books. If you like reading, take a moment to browse the shelves, which include titles in several languages. 

Extra: If you want a short detour, Casa Calvet, one of Gaudí’s lesser-known buildings, is nearby.

After breakfast, walk along Passeig de Gràcia to Casa Batlló. Here, Gaudí remodelled an existing building and turned it into a work of art, with flowing forms, colour, texture and details inspired by the sea. Can you imagine living in a house like this?

• Evening visits are also available, where you can enjoy the magic of the lighting, accompanied by music. 

Did you know? The pavement on Passeig de Gràcia echoes the design of Casa Milà’s floors, with marine motifs such as shells, starfish and seaweed. 

Continue up Passeig de Gràcia to the corner of Carrer de Provença where you’ll find Casa Milà, otherwise known as La Pedrera. Follow this street east and you will reach the Sagrada Família

The Sagrada Família is Barcelona’s most internationally recognised landmark. Look up and take in the columns that resemble a forest with coloured light filtering through the stained glass, giving it a magical feel.

If you go between 9 and 10 am, you’ll find it at its quietest. The basement museum adds context to Gaudí’s vision through models and images, helping make sense of what you’ve just seen. A visit that stays with you.

• Book in advance via the official website or official tourist information points. 

• Visitors with disabilities are entitled to free entry with a companion (advance booking required) 

• Wear appropriate clothing: no sheer fabrics, swimwear, miniskirts or shorts or attention-seeking outfits.

Exit via Carrer de Sardenya and head back towards the main entrance on Carrer de Marina, where you’ll find the wide pedestrian avenue known as Avinguda de Gaudí, lined with restaurants and shops. Look out for the street lamps designed by Pere Falqués.

If you are in the mood for really good pasta, this is the place. Expect a meal that leaves an impression.

A long-standing local spot, with fresh fish and seafood brought in the same day from the market. Excellent rice dishes and fried specialities.

At the end of the avenue you will find the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

Recommendations: 

• During the Christmas season, the inner courtyard hosts light installations and projections.

• It is known not only for its architecture but also for its scientific history.

Now it’s time to head a little further out, but it’s well worth the journey. Make your way to Passeig de Sant Joan and take the V19 bus to Park Güell. Originally planned as an English-style residential development, it is now one of the clearest expressions of Gaudí’s work: mosaics, stone, nature, religion, mythology and sweeping views over the city. 

It is one of Barcelona’s most magical places. If you can, stay until sunset. 

Recommendations: 

• Another easy option is bus 24 from Plaça de Catalunya. Get off at Carretera del Carmel–Albert Llanas. 

• Entry must be booked in advance at parkguell.cat or at official tourist information points, as there are no ticket offices in the park. 

• The most convenient entrance is via Carretera del Carmel, with a flat walk from the bus stop. 

• The Casa Museu Gaudí is not included in the standard park ticket and has an additional charge. 

   

After your visit, head towards Plaça d’Espanya for dinner. 

• Metro: take the L3 from Lesseps to Plaça d’Espanya.

• Bus: take the D40 from Travessera de Dalt to Plaça d’Espanya. 

“Be simple, be happy” is the motto here, and they stick to it. Simple dishes made with good ingredients and fresh produce that never disappoint. Notice the details in the decor, all created by the restaurant’s own customers.

Ideal for sharing in a relaxed setting. The creative tapas make for an enjoyable dinner, and the patatas bravas are a must, prepared with boiled rather than fried potatoes for an unexpected twist.
