This itinerary takes you through Barcelona’s modernista heritage, connecting works by Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch with distinctive spaces, restaurants and unexpected details along the way. From the upper district around Bellesguard to the Eixample and the Sagrada Família, the itinerary moves through very different parts of the city, each with its own atmosphere and character.
Start the day at Plaça de Kennedy, a good spot for breakfast before heading into Barcelona’s Modernisme.
Torre Bellesguard is one of Gaudí’s lesser-known works and one of the most distinctive. This is also where King Martin the Humane lived until his death in 1410. Centuries later, Gaudí built the tower over the remains of the medieval palace, creating a unique blend of Gothic and modernista styles.
Surrounded by gardens and with fabulous views, it’s a place that naturally encourages you to slow down.

Easy access by bus 196 from Plaça de Kennedy (stop Ronda de Dalt–Bellesguard). 
Did you know? The building is designed to resemble a dragon. Look out for its head with its eyes and nose.
On the way to the next stop, you will pass Avinguda del Tibidabo, where you will find Casa Roviralta, now the restaurant El Asador de Aranda, and La Balsa, a work by Oscar Tusquets, which is well worth a stop for anyone interested in contemporary architecture.
Continue to Ronda del General Mitre, where you will take bus H6 towards one of the city’s major landmarks.
Originally intended as an English-style housing development, Park Güell is now one of Gaudí’s most iconic works. Architecture, symbolism and nature come together here, with religious and mythological references, colourful trencadís (mosaic of broken ceramic tiles) and a hint of fairytale. Walking through it, there’s something new around every corner, with viewpoints offering spectacular views of Barcelona.
Recommendations:
Get off bus H6 at Travessera de Dalt–Torrent de les Flors, then it’s a 10-minute walk.
Entry must be booked in advance at parkguell.cat or at official tourist information points, as there are no ticket offices in the park.
The Casa Museu Gaudí is not included in the standard park ticket and has an additional charge.
If you were only planning to see Park Güell from the outside, you can skip the journey as the real charm is inside.
After your visit, head towards the Gràcia neighbourhood. On the way, stop at Plaça Lesseps to see Casa Ramos, a modernista building that featured in Pedro Almodóvar’s All About My Mother.
Nearby is the Biblioteca Jaume Fuster library by Josep Llinàs, winner of the 2006 FAD Architecture Award.

In the heart of Gràcia, you’ll come across Gaudí’s first major work. Casa Vicens is a burst of colour, form and plant-inspired detail that already hints at the creative world inside.
Flowers, ceramics and unexpected corners such as the smoking room make it a very different kind of visit.

On leaving, walk along Rambla de Prat and notice the modernista façades, especially numbers 17 and 23.
You can then choose from three restaurants in the area for lunch:
Inside, the Sagrada Família becomes a forest of light and colour, with an almost otherworldly atmosphere.
The basement museum is also well worth a visit, where Gaudí’s working methods and sources of inspiration are explained. It is often one of the most memorable parts of the visit.

Wear appropriate clothing: no sheer fabrics, swimwear, miniskirts or shorts or attention-seeking outfits.
Even if you don’t go inside, it is still worth seeing from the outside.
Continue along Avinguda Gaudí, the street that links two modernista landmarks.
Did you know? At the start of the avenue are the modernista street lamps by Pere Falqués, originally installed at the junction of Passeig de Gràcia and Diagonal (known as the “Cinc d’Oros”) and relocated here in 1987 due to traffic changes.
Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau transformed the idea of a hospital into a series of separate pavilions, each for a different medical speciality and all carefully decorated.
The main building, once the administrative centre, blends ceramics, sculpture and mosaic in fine detail. At the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau, everything has been carefully considered. It is a must-visit.

Check combined tickets with other sites such as La Pedrera or the Palau de la Música.

La Pedrera is best known for its undulating stone façade, thought to be inspired by the Prades mountains. Originally designed as a residential block, the building once housed the Milà family on the first floor. Inside, you can visit a period apartment, the attic space and one of the city’s most spectacular rooftops, where the chimneys take on sculptural forms.

The shop offers Gaudí-inspired products worth a look.
Looking for a different experience? La Pedrera Sunrise offers early morning visits before opening to the public.
The rooftop closes in case of rain, so it is worth checking the forecast.
Did you know? Nearby is Santa Eulalia, a historic shop dating back to 1843 with a café and terrace that is ideal for a short break and a look inside. Open from 11 am to 8 pm.
Casa Batlló is a striking mix of colour, form and detail, with mosaics evoking the seabed, organic balconies and a roof that resembles dragon scales. The visit offers a fully immersive experience of Gaudí’s most imaginative world.

Evening visits with live music create a very special atmosphere.
Right next door, Casa Amatller by Puig i Cadafalch is well worth a visit. It combines neo-Gothic and Modernista styles, giving it a strong, distinctive character. A good option if you have already visited Casa Batlló and want to explore more of this modernista block.
Recommendations:
Take time to look at the façade and entrance hall.
On the ground floor there is a café, ideal for a break with its signature hot chocolate.
Continue down through the Eixample, where you will find notable buildings in the same block, including Casa Lleó Morera (now the Loewe store), a modernista work by Domènech i Montaner.
Did you know? Just two streets away on Passeig de Gràcia is Farmàcia Bolòs, a modernista pharmacy from 1902 by Domènech Estapà.
Continue down Carrer de Casp to Casa Pascual i Pons by Enric Sagnier. Then head up to Casa Calvet by Antoni Gaudí, topped with a mushroom detail, a reference to Mr Calvet’s fondness for mushrooms.
After your walk, you can have lunch at Le Cucine Mandarosso.
Barcelona’s great modernista concert hall. Designed by Domènech i Montaner, the interior is full of stained glass, mosaics and sculpture, with a ceiling that draws your eye the moment you walk in. A guided tour reveals its history, architectural detail and the small touches that make it one of the city’s most distinctive buildings.

If you can, visit during a live performance. It changes the experience completely.
Continue towards La Rambla, passing smaller gems such as Farmàcia Padrell on Carrer de Sant Pere Més Baix and Farmàcia Nadal on La Rambla itself, both with richly decorated modernista façades and strong historical character.

On La Rambla, stop at Escribà pastry shop, located in the former Casa Figueras, a good place to take a break and recharge.
You will also pass Casa Bruno Cuadros, known as the “house of umbrellas”, one of the most photographed buildings in the city centre, as well as the former Xancó shirtmakers, over 200 years old, now a souvenir shop that still preserves its original furnishings.
Discover Gaudí’s early work in this lesser-known but essential building. Designed for the industrialist Eusebi Güell and his family, the Palau combines functional design with striking architectural features, including colourful rooftop chimneys and richly decorated interiors in wood and iron.
A visit here shows how Gaudí’s style developed in the city.
Recommendations:
Free entry on the first Sunday of the month, but advance online booking is required, opening at 10 am on the previous Thursday.
The rooftop and terrace close in bad weather, so it is worth checking the forecast.
