The first stop is a former textile factory from the late 18th century, once owned by the Framis family, now a Museum of Contemporary Painting. The space brings together industrial heritage and modern architecture. Inside you’ll find around 300 works linked to Catalonia, along with temporary exhibitions. A visit that mixes contrasts in a way that works surprisingly well.

Recommendations:

• Entry is allowed up to 30 minutes before closing.

• Particularly good for photography lovers thanks to the contrast between old and modern spaces. 

From here, the focus shifts from calm surroundings to design and creativity. 

Disseny Hub Barcelona is more than a museum. It shows how design runs through everyday life, from furniture and fashion to graphic and industrial objects, tracing how creativity changes over time. 

The building, designed by MBM Arquitectes, stands out for its contemporary architecture and its prominent position in Plaça de les Glòries. 

Recommendations: 

• Free entry on Sunday afternoons from 3pm to 8pm and on the first Sunday of each month. 

• The gift shop is worth a look, especially if you’re into design.

Did you know? A short walk away you’ll find the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya and L’Auditori, which also houses the Museu de la Música with a unique collection of instruments. 

Mercat dels Encants is one of Barcelona’s most iconic and oldest markets, dating back to the 14th century. It draws locals, collectors and those just browsing, and part of its appeal is never quite knowing what you might find. Real finds and unexpected treasures have ended up in the hands of collectors, museums and lucky individuals. Who knows what you might come across next? 

Recommendations:

• Auctions take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 am to 9 am.

• Bring cash, you never know what might catch your eye.

Did you know? The mirrored roof, suspended 25 metres above, reflects the movement of the market below and creates a striking visual effect. 

For lunch, you’ll find plenty of choice inside the Westfield Glòries shopping centre.

Inside the shopping centre, El Mercat brings together 14 food stalls open daily from 10 am to 1 am. A good place to share dishes and try a bit of everything. 

After lunch, there’s an optional stop for those comfortable with heights. 

Torre Glòries, formerly Torre Agbar, offers some of the best panoramic views over Barcelona. Designed by Jean Nouvel, this 144-metre tower combines architecture with an immersive viewing experience. 

Recommendations: 

• The mirrored interior dome creates a unique immersive experience.

• Children up to 12 enter free.

Continue towards one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. 

Sagrada Família is visible from a distance and is the city’s most striking building. Inside, the atmosphere is unlike anything else, with columns shaped like trees and stained glass that fills the space with shifting light and colour. Every detail has meaning, which makes the visit feel complete. 

Afterwards, walk up Avinguda de Gaudí to reach the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau. 

Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau is just a short walk from the Sagrada Família but feels very different. This former hospital, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, is made up of pavilions linked by gardens and underground passages, designed with patients’ wellbeing in mind. Ceramic work, stained glass and sculpture appear throughout the site. 

Recommendations: 

• Best seen after the Sagrada Família to compare two takes on Modernisme. 

• If you’re visiting at certain times of year, check for events such as the Christmas light show. 

After your visit, take bus H8 to Diagonal–Francesc Macià for Catalan cuisine at La Dolceta 2, or take metro line 5 to Horta for Can Travi Nou. 

A Catalan farmhouse-style restaurant in the city centre, specialising in grilled dishes. Highlights include snails, calçots (in season) and grilled meats. A good place to try traditional Catalan cuisine. 

A historic farmhouse in the Horta district. With more than 30 years behind it, it’s a well-established name in Catalan cooking. The setting, with its terraces and gardens, adds to the experience. 

The day starts in the upper part of Barcelona, where things feel calmer and more relaxed. 

Torre Bellesguard is one of Gaudí’s lesser-known works and one of the most distinctive. This is also where King Martin the Humane lived until his death in 1410. Centuries later, Gaudí built the tower over the remains of the medieval palace, creating a unique blend of Gothic and modernista styles. 

Surrounded by gardens and with fabulous views, it’s a place that naturally encourages you to slow down. 

Recommendations:

• One of Gaudí’s more affordable visits.

• Check the website for events such as Eat Gaudí, a food market in June.

• Easy access by bus 196 from Plaça de Kennedy (stop Ronda de Dalt–Bellesguard). 

Continue by taking bus H4 from Plaça de Kennedy to Carrer del Bisbe Català–Plaça de Pedralbes, where a monumental complex gives its name to the Pedralbes district. 

If you haven’t had breakfast, you can get off earlier at Passeig de Reina Elisenda–Carrer Major de Sarrià, where you’ll find Foix de Sarrià, open since 1886. If you still feel like something to eat, the Mercat de Sarrià market is a good stop, more local and less crowded. 

Monestir de Pedralbes is one of the finest examples of Catalan Gothic architecture, both in its church and its three-storey cloister, one of the largest and most balanced of its kind. Inside, the tomb of Queen Elisenda is particularly striking, presented as a queen from the church side and as a widow and penitent from the cloister. 

One of the most distinctive spaces is the Chapel of Sant Miquel, decorated with a magnificent set of 14th-century murals commissioned from Ferrer Bassa by Abbess Francesca ça Portella for her private use.

Recommendations:

• A real piece of cultural heritage with very reasonable entry prices.

• Quiet and rarely crowded, a very peaceful place to visit. 

• Free entry on the first Sunday of the month and every Sunday from 3 pm.

• Entry allowed up to one hour before closing, so it’s worth planning ahead. 

Continue down Avinguda de Pedralbes until you reach the Finca Güell pavilions.

In this early Gaudí work you can see his Neo-Mudéjar style, with the use of ceramics, wrought iron and even antimony. The dragon-shaped gate, rich in mythological symbolism, marks the entrance to the Güell estate. On either side, you’ll find a gatekeeper’s lodge and a former riding arena. 

Did you know? The dragon on the gate is Ladó, said to guard the Garden of the Hesperides. Its shape also echoes the constellation Draco. 

Continue on foot, as three more works by Gaudí are dotted around the area: 

• The gate of Finca Miralles on Passeig de Manuel Girona.

• The current gate of the Faculty of Pharmacy on Avinguda de Joan XXIII.

• The Hercules Fountain in the gardens of Pedralbes Palace. 

If football is your thing, Spotify Camp Nou is close by, with the official store and the FC Barcelona museum. 

From here, take metro line 3 to Paral·lel, where you can catch the Montjuïc funicular. Before heading up, it’s worth stopping for lunch around Paral·lel.

Did you know? At 175 Nou de la Rambla you’ll find Refugi 307, a Spanish Civil War bomb shelter. It can only be visited on Sundays with a guided tour. 

Take the Montjuïc funicular up the hill and choose between two options: 

If contemporary art is more your thing, the Fundació Joan Miró is a good stop in Montjuïc.

The foundation was created by Miró himself and lets you explore his work in depth. The building, designed by Josep Lluís Sert, is part of the experience, with spaces that seem to echo the art they hold, so the visit feels seamless. 

Recommendations: 

• Don’t miss the terraces with Miró’s sculptures and incredible views over the city. 

• There is also a gift shop, bookshop and restaurant on site. 

• Look for Alexander Calder’s mercury fountain, it’s hard to walk past without stopping.

• Entry included with the Barcelona Card Essential. 

• If you want to combine Refugi 307 with the Fundació Miró, Sunday works well. 

If you only visit one museum in Barcelona, this is a solid choice. 

The MNAC covers the history of Catalan art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, with works such as the Romanesque mural paintings from the churches of the Vall de Boí, alongside pieces like La dormició de la Verge (The Dormition of the Virgin) by Damià Forment, La vicaría (The Vicariate) by Mariano Fortuny, which is worth getting closer to appreciate the detail, and Gran bailarina (The Great Dancer) by Pablo Gargallo.

It is housed in the Palau Nacional, built in 1929 for the International Exhibition, which is already reason enough to visit on its own. 

Recommendations: 

• If you are short on time, you can visit only the building, terraces and dome for €2. The restaurant Absis also has spectacular views.

• Free entry for under 16s and EU residents over 65. 

• Free on the first Sunday of the month and Saturday afternoons from 3 pm to 7 pm.

• Bus 55 from Plaça de Catalunya or bus 150 from Plaça d’Espanya. 

• Entry included with the Barcelona Card Essential. 

Continue downhill to Poble Espanyol, an unusual place built for the 1929 International Exhibition to showcase architectural and cultural traditions from across Spain.

Inside you’ll find craft workshops, shops and a full programme of cultural activities throughout the day and into the evening, from cinema to festivals and concerts. It’s an easy place to spend some time, especially with children, who will probably head straight for the slides in the Joan Brossa gardens. 

Recommendations: 

• Check evening prices and the event schedule. 

• Ask about combined tickets with MNAC or the Las Golondrinas boat trip. 

• There are plenty of places to eat inside, and it’s worth seeing the site in the evening.

A classic way to end the day: a 30-minute mix of light, water and music that leaves an impression, and it’s free.

Start the day with a proper breakfast in the Arc de Triomf area, before taking bus V19. 

A citywide chain of cafés known for sandwiches, pastries, juices and coffee. Its Iberian ham sandwich was even featured in The New York Times. 

A traditional café known for churros with hot chocolate. The suizo (hot chocolate with cream) is also worth trying. 

Once you’ve had a proper breakfast, it’s time to start the day with one of Gaudí’s best-known works. Originally planned as an English-style residential development, Park Güell is now one of the city’s main sights. Here, Gaudí combines nature, architecture and symbolism, with religious and mythological references and even a hint of fairytale, like Hansel and Gretel. 

Walking through it is about wandering through shapes, colours and viewpoints, with spectacular views over Barcelona.

Recommendations: 

• Entry must be booked in advance at parkguell.cat or at official tourist information points, as there are no ticket offices in the park. 

• The most convenient entrance is via Carretera del Carmel, with a flat walk from the bus stop. 

• The Casa Museu Gaudí is not included in the standard park ticket and has an additional charge. 

• It’s quieter early in the morning. 

From here, walk down through the streets of Gràcia, passing Plaça del Nord, Plaça de la Virreina, Plaça del Diamant and Carrer de Verdi. Along the way, you can play a game...

If you head into the Gràcia neighbourhood you’ll find Casa Vicens, Gaudí’s first major work. Flowers, palm leaves and tucked-away corners give the house a very different feel from anything you’ve seen so far. The smoking room is especially striking. 

Recommendations: 

• Staff in the rooms can answer questions and provide information. 

• Bring headphones to make the most of the audio guide. 

• A Gaudí experience for all budgets.

Once you finish your visit, look for somewhere to stop for lunch.

A traditional neighbourhood-style place serving local dishes such as pa amb tomàquet, omelettes, fricandó (a slow-cooked beef stew with mushrooms and a rich sauce) and seasonal artichokes in a small, relaxed setting. 

If you fancy a good rice dish, this is the place. The arròs del senyoret is especially recommended. 

If you head into the Eixample you’ll reach one of Barcelona’s most elegant streets, where La Pedrera comes first and a little further down Casa Batlló, both by Gaudí. You can visit either one or both. 

As you get closer to La Pedrera, notice the undulating stone façade, often said to be inspired by the Prades mountains. Originally designed as a residential block, the building once housed the Milà family on the first floor. Inside, you can visit a period furnished apartment, the attic and the rooftop with its futuristic chimneys. The building’s interior is often compared to the inside of a whale. It’s worth seeing for yourself.

• The shop offers Gaudí-inspired products worth a look. 

• Looking for a different experience? La Pedrera Sunrise offers early morning visits before opening to the public.

• The rooftop closes in case of rain, so it is worth checking the forecast.

Walk on to Casa Batlló in the Block of Discord. Gaudí remodelled an existing building and turned it into something completely unique. 

Mosaic, masks, a mushroom-shaped chimney and ceilings that recall the sea floor make this a fully immersive visit. Can you imagine living in a house like this? 

Recommendations: 

• Spanish residents may be eligible for 2-for-1 tickets. Check the official website.

• Evening visits with live music create a very special atmosphere. 

Once your visit is over, head down to Plaça de Catalunya, the city centre, where you can choose between two options: 

→ On the left side (Plaça d’Urquinaona), the Palau de la Música Catalana is well worth a visit.

→ On the right side (Rambla), you’ll find the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA).

Barcelona’s great modernista concert hall. Designed by Domènech i Montaner, the interior is full of stained glass, mosaics and sculpture, with a ceiling that draws your eye the moment you walk in. A guided tour reveals its history, architectural detail and the small touches that make it one of the city’s most distinctive buildings. 

Recommendations:

• Consider a guided tour to learn more about its history.

• If you can, visit during a live performance. It changes the experience completely.

A journey through 20th and 21st-century art, housed in the 18th-century Palau Gomis. The museum also runs regular activities such as Friday Blues and Saturday Classic, where its collection is combined with live music.

Discover modern and contemporary art on Carrer de Montcada, one of the most characterful streets in El Born. Here you’ll find works by artists such as Warhol and Banksy, a reference point for contemporary art in the city.

From here, continue on to the final stop of the day, an important church in the area. 

Considered one of the finest examples of Catalan Gothic architecture, this is one of Barcelona’s most special churches. Built in just 54 years, it is also a symbol of community: wealthier residents contributed financially, while poorer workers such as the bastaixos (dock labourers) did the physical work. They are still represented today, both on the main altar and at the entrance doors. 

Recommendations: 

• Access to the terraces and towers is not permitted for children under 8. 

• Outdoor areas close in case of rain.

The Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) is a centre that encourages people to engage with contemporary art and culture, with the aim of contributing to broader social and personal change. Its collection focuses on art from the second half of the 20th century to the present day. The building was designed by the architect Richard Meier. 

Recommendations:

• Free entry on Saturdays from 4pm to 8pm, advance booking required. 

• Entry included with the Barcelona Card Essential.

Did you know? The square beside the MACBA is a popular spot for skaters. How many can you spot? 

In the area you’ll also find two important medieval sites worth a look: the former Hospital de la Santa Creu and the Monestir de Sant Pau del Camp. 

Between 1414 and 1926, the Hospital de la Santa Creu was the city’s main healthcare complex. Today it houses the Biblioteca de Catalunya and the Institut d’Estudis Catalans, among other institutions. 

Recommendations: 

• Only the library is open to visitors. Please enter quietly. 

• Check the website for exhibitions, events and concerts.

Did you know? In 1926 Antoni Gaudí was seriously injured after being hit by a tram and was brought here, where he was one of the hospital’s last patients before it closed. 

Continue towards la Rambla del Raval until you reach the Monestir de Sant Pau del Camp. 

Thought to have Visigothic origins, the building is now Romanesque in style, with carved stonework showing fantastical animals and human faces. To the south is a small cloister with lobed arches, varied columns and capitals, where you can take a quiet break from the busy surrounding streets. More than 900 years of history are contained in a building that reflects the city’s layered past, with a calm atmosphere that feels far removed from the pace outside.

Recommendations: 

• Guided tours take place on Sundays at 12.45pm in Catalan.

• Check the website for concerts and events. 

At the end of la Rambla, if you want more contemporary art with temporary exhibitions, you can visit the Centre d’Arts Santa Mònica. 

For dinner, there are two tapas places nearby.

Dishes are meant for sharing here. Fresh seasonal produce is cooked at the counter, where you can watch it being prepared.

Extra! To round off the day, head to Bar Mudanzas, a long-standing cocktail bar. 

Start the day at a jewel of Catalan Romanesque architecture. The monastery is known for its cloister with 144 unique capitals, a space that invites you to step inside.

Recommendations: 

• The church is free to visit, but the cloister is the real must-see. 

A 20-minute walk or the B8 bus (from Plaça dels Quatre Cantons to Avinguda de Rius i Taulet–Carretera de Granollers) takes you somewhere completely different.

This space is dedicated to the legacy of Josep Palau i Fabre, a passionate supporter of the arts and a friend of figures such as Pablo Picasso. Since 2003, the foundation has brought together a notable collection alongside temporary exhibitions.

• Check the website for any changes to opening times or closures.
• Free entry on the first Sunday of the month

The perfect place for anyone interested in antiques and objects with a past. The market combines shops, workshops and places to eat. Everything here feels like it has a story and you might well come across something you want to take home.

Then return to the station on the L2A bus (from Carretera de Vallvidrera–CAP Turó Can Mates to Àngel Guimerà–Villa) and take the FGC S1 towards Terrassa Estació del Nord.

A short seven-minute walk brings you to your first stop in the town. If you haven’t eaten yet, Cuina d’en Brichs is nearby.

Time to unwind. This spa draws on mineral-rich thermal waters at 38.8°C, ideal for switching off. A small luxury by the sea.

Recommendations:

• Book in advance to secure a place.
• Try the thermal circuits for a more complete experience.

Did you know? In the same square you’ll find an old public washhouse fed by hot water.

This monumental complex has over 1,500 years of history. You can visit the three churches (Sant Miquel, Sant Pere and Santa Maria), which contain Romanesque paintings that take you back in time.

• Entry is free on the first weekend of each month.

Did you know? It is currently a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status.

A 25-minute walk takes you past modernista buildings such as the Teatre Principal, Magatzem Torras and the Mercat de la Independència.

End the day simply, with sun and sea on the beaches of Caldes. Along the seafront you’ll find several places to eat right by the water, including Restaurant Sotavent.

Homemade Mediterranean cooking in a welcoming, relaxed setting, perfect for a break. Seasonal dishes and a menu you can always rely on.

With your body relaxed and your mind switched off, all that’s left is to take the train back to Barcelona.

One of Terrassa’s modernista landmarks, designed by Lluís Muncunill. Its curved forms and parabolic arches recall Gaudí’s work and make it unique and eye-catching.

Although it is currently under restoration, the exterior is still well worth a look.

A short walk away is the Museu Nacional de la Ciència i la Tècnica de Catalunya, set in a former modernista factory (scheduled to reopen in 2026).

Did you know? If you’re still hungry, Terrassa is known for its frankfurters. The best known is Frankfurt Vallès, one of the places that helped make them popular in Spain, with two locations: the original on Carrer de Gavatxons and another on Portal Sant Roc. Will you leave Terrassa without trying one?

With that final note, all that remains is an easy return from Terrassa to Barcelona on the FGC.
